THE INAUGURAL COLLECTION

The Beaches, Volume I

Six silver gelatin prints of Vancouver’s shoreline, from Spanish Banks to Third Beach. Limited edition.

Each Piece Brings a Little More Life Indoors

A celebration of the urban Vancouver experience

The seawall at dawn, with that fine mist on the pavement, in those quiet moments before the city wakes up. Vancouver is often bold, but also subtle, if you’re paying attention.

A closer connection to your community

Vancouver doesn’t always make it easy to feel like you belong. Here’s your daily reminder that you do. A small, everyday affirmation, in the space that matters to you most.

A piece of your story, made permanent

The places that shaped you, fixed in silver. Artwork your family will notice, and know it mattered to you. Made with archival materials that won't fade in your lifetime, or theirs.

I Think a Lot About How Things Are Designed

I spent more than 20 years as a professional designer. It taught me to look closely at how things are made, and who they’re made for.

Vancouver, in many ways, is beautifully designed. An inspiration for cities around the world. And yet the affordability crisis here can only be seen as a design flaw, unless we’re meant to consider it a feature.

The shape of a thing reveals itself on inspection, and I’ve been inspecting this city with my camera for more than a decade. The shape is still coming into focus.

Made in a Darkroom, Not a Warehouse

These aren't inkjet prints from a third-party print lab.
They're made in my studio, under a safelight, one at a time.

This is anything but an efficient operation. Each image takes shape slowly, from a baseline exposure to one enhanced with localized tonal adjustments, achieved with multiple dodges, burns, and other techniques.

The end result is an original silver gelatin print, made the same way photographers have worked for over a hundred years.

FAQs

What size are the prints?

1

All prints have an image area approximately 25 × 25 cm (10 × 10 inches). This is my standard size. It's a great size for most spaces and easy to frame.

Do you sell framed or matted prints?

2

Not yet. Right now I sell prints unframed, but I include framing recommendations with every order. Most frame shops can have your print ready to hang in about a week.

What's your return policy?

3

If you're not happy with your print, just send me an email and return it within 30 days for a full refund. You just cover return shipping. The print must be unframed and in the same condition you received it.

How many prints are available of each image?

4

Each image is released in a small, numbered, limited edition. Edition sizes vary by image. When an edition sells out, that image is retired and won't be printed again.

Do you ship internationally?

5

No. As of today, I only ship within Canada. International shipping will likely be an option in the future—sign up for my newsletter to be notified when it's available.

Are these actually printed by hand in a darkroom?

6

Yes. I make every print myself in my West End studio darkroom using traditional photographic paper and chemistry. No computers. No print labs.

Spanish Banks, October 2025

Spanish Banks at low tide is one of my favourite places. It has a bit of an alien world quality, with a long, rocky shore stretching east to west for what seems like forever.

I often visit with my camera, but don’t usually aim the lens north, across the Burrard Inlet, as I’ve done in this image. I remember this windy October morning well, and my excitement at having found this composition just waiting for me, after all this time. There’s usually one or more tanker ships in the inlet that spoil scenes like this, but not on that day.

Kitsilano Beach, October 2025
$295.00

Kitsilano Beach is arguably the only competition English Bay Beach has for the title of best urban beach in Vancouver—and some might even say Canada at large. In this view, taken from the western edge of Kits Beach, you can catch a glimpse of both, with the gentle curve of Kitsilano sand in the foreground, and the northern edge of English Bay Beach and Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood in the distance.

Taken late in the season, the focus is on the beach itself, rather than the people who enjoy it daily. But if you look closely, you’ll find one or two, along with several ghosted silhouettes, summoned by the long exposure.

Sunset Beach is familiar ground. Our family knows it well, and we walk its length almost daily, from the southern edge near the bridge at the bottom of this image, to the Inukshuk pictured at the northern peninsula, where English Bay Beach begins.

I know this area so well that it’s difficult for me to make an interesting photo of it from my typical perspective; I’m grateful that Burrard Bridge is there to help with that. From up here, we can see more clearly this beach for what it is—an everyday playground, resting at the feet of tens of thousands of West End residents, stacked above in a forest of towers.
