Growing up as I did, in parts of the American Midwest and the Canadian Prairies, palm trees were just not part of the landscape. When I saw one, it was always in some tropical setting—a TV show about a moustache set in Hawaii, or a photo in Thrasher magazine set in California.
When I relocated to British Columbia nearly twenty years ago, I was surprised to find these mythical trees thriving here. I’ve since learned that our varietal is not exactly the same as the coconut-bearing palms of the tropics, but they will forever be one of the first images that come to mind when I think about beaches.
This particular tree is a glorious specimen—tall, healthy, and full—found near the entrance to English Bay Beach, and photographed with a strong, late-afternoon sun to the west.
